Who is this for?
Premed/prehealth students who want to be able to treat their future patients in Spanish.
You also need a sense of adventure and must have sufficient independence to be away from home for an extended trip.
What is Spanish & Shadowing?
A study abroad program for premed/prehealth students featuring Spanish immersion and medical shadowing in Latin America.
Our mission is to help prepare future
healthcare professionals to treat America’s large Spanish-speaking population safely and with empathy.
When does it start?
There are several start dates during the summer so most people can fit it into their academic calendar. Visit www.ShadowAbroad.com for updated info.
Is the shadowing AAMC-compliant?
Yes. The shadowing is “hands off” and observational to meet American (and local) ethics requirements.
Where is Spanish & Shadowing located?
Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America. While Chile is the main center, other recent sites include Peru, Ecuador, Uruguay, and Argentina.
How much prior Spanish is required?
The program is suitable for Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced Spanish students. Many students who are already fluent can participate in the "heritage speaker" track.
Where does the shadowing take place?
Shadowing rotations are in local hospitals (public) and clinics (private). Most students are able to follow a variety of specialties.
How long is the program?
The full program is nine weeks: three weeks in three countries. Transportation between locations is included.
Each 3-week block is equivalent to one university course. The course catalog details the curriculum of each course.
