Terms of Service - Spanish & Shadowing

Program Mission

The Spanish & Shadowing programs are jointly provided by Shadow Abroad and Progressive Education Group, respectively non-profit and social enterprise organizations.

Our goal is to help you, the student, treat your future Spanish-speaking patients safely in their language and with cultural empathy.

If you have been accepted into the program, we believe you share that goal and are not just enrolling to enhance your portfolio.

Please remember this is a language-first program, and should not be considered a substitute for medical and/or scientific training.

General Reminders

You and your advisor may have already discussed these aspects but as a reminder...

Standard of Living This is not a luxury trip. Do not expect to be as comfortable as at home. Some conveniences you take for granted may not be readily available.

Busy Schedule Spanish & Shadowing is not a "glorified vacation" like some study abroad programs. You will have a limited amount of free time.

Culturally Adaptive You will be surrounded by people of a different culture who speak a different language. Do your best to appreciate cultural differences.

Living in the Now Practice mindfulness and savor the experience. We recommend you keep a journal of your experience. Not only will it focus you on the present, but it will give you something to reference later when crafting a personal statement.

Flexibility Latin American cultures can seem spontaneous and less structured than those of the USA or Canada. It may be difficult, but you can choose to view this as charming instead of annoying.

'Buena Onda' - Good Attitude Although being abroad is usually wonderful, it can be stressful. Let's remember to keep a good attitude, a "buena onda" and pick each other up. The program is not a competition and we do not rank students.

Health & Safety We are a language school and not an authority for health or safety guidance. We are not qualified to give legal or medical advice. While the staff makes every effort to be helpful, any serious incident must be left to local authorities and/or your embassy.

Program Components

Shadowing We adhere to the ethical guidelines for shadowing set by the AACP. The shadowing is observational, not a hands-on assignment.

Spanish Course Classes are deliberately kept small for a reason: so you get lots of practice. The "learn by doing" approach is likely different than your prior courses. Most students find it far more effective.
